a few nvda questions

Recently, I switched over to nvda. While I have most of it figured out and set up, there are a few things I want to change if possible. One, is there any way to make nvda stop saying the heading levels and landmarks when browsing a website? Two, when working with a document and pressing the tab key, is there any way I can make nvda stop saying the number of inches that have been indented. And three, I've noticed that when moving around, sometimes nvda will say things such is in list or out of list. Can I shut this off? I'm using the latest version of nvda on windows seven, 64 bit.

To stop NVDA from speaking landmarks, lists, headings, go to the document formatting dialog with ctrl NVDA d, you'll se checkboxes for those that you can disable. Seeing as I don't use anything like ms word with NVDA, as far as tabbing around a document and it saying inches, I wouldn't be able to tell you what to disable, but I would try disabling a few things at a time, to see which will stop it from saying inches.

all great questions and thanks zack. I was wondering if anyone knew how to use the emoji add-on.

I don't know cause I don't have that, really no need for it anyway

To insert an emoticon, press NVDA + I.

Choose the one you want and it'll be coppied to the clipboard.

Since we're all discussing NVDA, I've got a quick question. I haven't been able to use it on my last two computers, running windows 7 and 10 respectively. it reads everything except the start menu and any and all right clicking context menus. it just says "blank for each of those, rendering the screen reader sort of useless for many tasks. Has anyone encountered this? I've been googling it off and on for years with no helpful results.

You may want to change your screen resolution to something like 1280 by 700, or higher, because if your screen resolution is too low, it can make text on the screen that is supposed to be on screen not visible to NVDA, thus NVDA wont be able to read it. I've had to do this before so I know

That's a very interesting solution Zack. Thanks. I'll definetly give that a try. I like using NVDA and JAWS for different things because they both have their strengths.

Since NVDA has its own volleum controls for the voice you have selected, I'm having a hard time trying to adjust the volume of everything else so that I can hear NVDA as well as whatever else I happening to be listening to, music, a moive, or playing a mud with a soundpack and listening to something else while playing. How can I fix this issue?

Post 10 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Thursday, 30-Mar-2017 16:20:04

NVDA does have something called ducking, I believe the shortcut to go from one choice to the other is NVDA shift d, or you could set it in the synth selection dialog

There is a fix for NVDA that, after doing some windows updates breaks some shared DLL libraries, open a command prompt as administrator and run the following command
for %x in (c:windowssystem32*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %x
This will fix the context menu issue as well as the unknown unknown unknown issue in thunderbird and firefox.

In addition I forgot to mention that you can disable audio ducking in the synthesizer dialog and also you can adjust NVDA's volume on the fly. I use laptop layout so I use caps lock, shift, control and the left and right arrow keys to cycle between the different voice settings like pitch, inflection, rate, volume, voice, etc, and then using the up and down arrows to change the values.

Do those fixes only apply to users of win 7? just was curious, seeing as I don't use any of those apps, I mainly just use I e and if I ave crome i'll use that too but email I use only on the mac side of things. I also use keyboard layout with NVDA as well since it's what i'm used to.

Post 14 by just-chillin (Zone BBS is my Life) on Thursday, 30-Mar-2017 18:13:18

That fix applies to windows 7 and above, for example I'm running windows 10, and I had the same exact issues described above with context menus not being read. The problem also effected jaws, but not to the extent that it did with NVDA since jaws has it's own intercept systems to relay information whilst NVDA relies on MSAA heavily.

Great stuff! Is there anyway to use the voice program in JAWS or Open Book as the default voice in NVDA? I hope that makes sense. I think you can buy a program from NVDA so that you can use the JAWS voice. I have two of them already, so I'm wondering if I have to purchase the additional software. I'm getting ready to transition from JAWS to NVDA, but I've been using JAWS for so many years. I'm used to the pronounciations and inflections. Ed

Interesting. This seems to have fixed the problem for the moment. Nothing happened when I ran the command, but when I started NVDA, everything seems to be workingnow. Thanks.

Post 17 by just-chillin (Zone BBS is my Life) on Thursday, 30-Mar-2017 23:50:36

the command will not produce any output, it simply reregisters DLL's. It was likely do to a recent windows update you did. NVDA is 95% just like jaws, and takes very little learning to adapt, the manual and screen review commands, I.E. the jaws cursor like navigation is different, but, if you are familiar with voiceover, you'll pick it up very quickly. If NVDA is too verbose, then adjust things in the settings.

In addition, if you mean eloquence when you referred to the jaws voice, then that can be downloaded for free online as an add-on. Ignore the nay sayers that may say it's illegal or whatever.
If you want the old eloquence from jaws 3.2 click this link
http://jeff.tdrealms.com/Add-Ons/old_eloquence.nvda-addon
If you want the standard eloquence synthesizer, click this link

Hope that helps

Thanks. I have never, ever been able to use NVDA on the last two computers as I stated, so this will be very helpful, especially when dealing with programs where I need to use the mouse a lot. I use the mouse speech output feature quite a bit.

Post 20 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 31-Mar-2017 12:48:09

I really wish JAWS would implement this feature, honestly.

code factory has eloquence and vocalizer for a cheap price, not exactly sure how cheap though seeing as I don't really use them anyway. You may also be glad to know that NVDA remote, which is something like jaws tandom is also available.

Post 22 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 31-Mar-2017 19:38:56

Last I saw, vocalizer was free for NVDA. Is that no longer the case? As long as I'm not using that dreadful default NVDA voice.

Post 23 by just-chillin (Zone BBS is my Life) on Friday, 31-Mar-2017 20:38:19

ESpeak is absolutely atrocious. Vocalizer should be available, quote, for free, if you are able to find it, personally those voices can be slow and use a lot of ram, so I tend not to use them.

Re: Jaws and mouse speech output, hahaha, don't count on it they can't even fix bugs that already exist.

Post 24 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Friday, 31-Mar-2017 23:31:48

I've used e speak for years pretty much. what I find is if you set the voice to u s, varient to klat 2, inflection left alone, pitch set to 52, your pretty much good to go.

Post 25 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Friday, 31-Mar-2017 23:35:02

as far as Vocalizer goes, your better off getting it from code factory if you want them because the ones from that other company that I can't even spell the name of, tifloaktneia or however you spell it, last I checked they are still at version 3 and Vocalizer is up to version 6 now, the last time they put out an update to that was 4 years ago and I haven't seen any other updates since, so i'm assuming since code factory also offers it that it will take over that and keep it more up to date

I think the vocalizer and jaws addon for NVDA from code factory is like $70

Thanks for all the great information! You guys really know your stuff.

Post 28 by sia fan bp (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 06-Apr-2017 22:22:10

Yeah they do. thanks guys!
I use NVDA mainly for gaming. lol, but I'm having trouble. I mean, I'm in Spanish class and I can't really access the accent things like I could with jaws. how do I do that?

Post 29 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Friday, 07-Apr-2017 3:37:38

accent thing? what do you mean? do you mean a list of symbles?

Post 30 by sia fan bp (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 09-May-2017 21:17:02

yeah. Oh, and thanks for the link, just-chillin! shall download.
